Artful Readers Club - April Read

My book for April was The Brethren by John Grisham published in 2000.

I was totally sucked in to the narrative from the first page and found it difficult to put the book down!  For me, it contained all the elements of an expertly fashioned and totally believable crime story with a political sub-plot. In no way spoiling the plot, the main characters are two ex-high court judges and a disgraced Justice of the Peace who are serving lengthy sentences in a federal prison in Florida.  With the help of a bent lawyer, they place advertisements in a contact magazine and pose as young men wishing to become 'pen pals'  with older men.
At the same time they are busy writing their letters, a country is going to the polls to elect a new President.

A piece of American junk mail arrived fortuitously in the post box this week so I thought a collage would best depict this very enjoyable book.  The fingerprints, letter (written in block capitals), SWM (single white male) and postage stamps with election badges set the scene for a great read.

Thanks for stopping by and I do hope you will check out all the other reviews at Darcy's Art-and-Sole and thank you for your lovely comments.

  9. I've read pretty well all of Grisham's books including this one. They are good easy and fast paced books for a journey or holiday, and I remember this one was not disappointing. Your artwork collage is great, summing up elements of the story. I like the fingerprints idea and the clever touch of using block capitals for the letter.

  10. I was super impressed with both your review and your wonderful collage. The fingerprints were a clever addition that seemed to bring it all together. I've read several of Grisham's books, but have never heard of this one. Now I'm truly intrigued.

Thanks for stopping by my review earlier in the month. Sorry I'm late getting here. I would gladly take your advice to burn my April book if only I owned it. However, I borrowed it from a friend and she already has it back in her possession. What she does with it is hard to tell, but I can only hope she never makes anything from that book for ME!!

  12. Beautiful collage! So much to see and so appropriate for the book. I'm not a Grisham fan but we have all his books as hubby is...perhaps I should give them a try - I loved your review.

  13. Great collage, I love it when I can use junk mail. Your book sounds quite gritty, sign of an excellent book when you are sucked in from the start.

  14. I love Grisham's prose. His stories have color, soul and lessons that are taught so expertly that the reader doesn't mind (or notices) the teaching. Great choice!

The collage makes me want to touch it. It tells it's own story ;-)
